German — 130 million speakers worldwide

German is the most spoken language within the EU. 101 million Europeans speak German as a mother tongue. Worldwide there are even 130 million people speaking German.

German is spoken in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, in parts of Belgium, Northern Italy and Eastern France. German is the second most important language behind English, which is used in areas as commerce, tourism and diplomacy. German as a mother tongue is spoken in more countries than English, Spanish, French or Italian.

German in economy, research and on the internet

German is one of the major economic languages and will gain further power thanks to the enlargement towards the East.

German speaking countries take a large place in the research area regarding the increase of know how and scholarship programs.. Many important theories have been and are written in the German language. Original texts in German can be a helpful tools for pushing your carreer.

The famous musicians and composers Mozart, Bach, Schubert, Schuhmann, Haydn, Beethoven and Wagner spoke German as a mother tongue. The Viennese music scene is renown worldwide.

Scientists and philosophers known in the whole world like Einstein, Leibniz, Kepler, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein and Freud lived in the German speaking world.
